‘Through interpretation, understanding; through understanding, appreciation; through appreciation, protection’
Tilden, Interpreting Our Heritage, 1957
Interpretation is one way in which the interest, significance, value and meaning of a heritage asset is communicated to the public. Interpretation has its origins in the museums sector and has now become a universal feature of the presentation of heritage sites and cities to the public. We believe that to connect with an audience, interpretation must:
- provoke their attention;
- be pleasurable;
- be interesting and meaningful;
- be well-organised and easy to use and understand; and
- have a clear theme or idea to communicate.
We believe that effective interpretation can:
- contribute to the visitor’s understanding and appreciation
- reduce damage and wear and tear at sensitive sites and localities
- tackle issues that may be affecting the quality of the visitor experience and the quality of life for local people
- attract and disperse visitors within the destination to spread the economic benefits more widely
- encourage visitors to visit the parts of the destination that are best able to handle them.
Sherwood & Associates have a team of specialist designers who can deliver clients exciting , dynamic solutions to all their interpretative needs.
